Government
The buyers — agency profiles, what is loaded for each state and territory, and the budget programs that fund the work.
Status: in development. Agency profiles are connected. ANAO performance audit findings are not joined to a profile yet.
Government is the buying side of every notice. Its items in the sidebar are Agencies, States and territories and Budget programs (Budget programs has its own page). Suppliers, the other side, are under Market intelligence.
Agencies
An agency profile pulls together everything a Commonwealth entity has bought, through which methods and panels, in which categories, over which years — joined to its budget programs from the Portfolio Budget Statements. There are 197 Commonwealth entities in the register, with the trading names and abbreviations they actually publish under mapped on, so a search for an abbreviation and one for the full legal name land on the same profile.
The register is no longer Commonwealth-only. Queensland's bodies were loaded into it as its first state wave, and New South Wales, Western Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory, Victoria and South Australia have followed on the same keys — which is why the agency list has a tab for each of the eight governments. It matters because Queensland's publishers do not agree with each other about names: the forward procurement pipeline writes "Department of Education" and that department's own contract disclosure report writes "DoE", and across the whole file not one of the 38 pipeline agency names matches an award agency name. The register is what makes them one buyer — so a Queensland plan links to that buyer's awards, an award links to its forward plan, and the entity page gathers both. A body the wave does not hold keeps the name its publisher used and simply carries no link; nothing is guessed. And a state entity's page shows the two blocks its records actually live in rather than the Commonwealth four, because contracts, panels and budget programs are AusTender figures and read zero for a state body.
States and territories
States and territories is the honest coverage page: what is loaded, from which portal, and what is not there yet.
Coverage is not the same shape in every jurisdiction, and the page says so line by line rather than averaging it into a status word. New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory each have open tenders, forward plans and awards; New South Wales alone publishes standing schemes; Western Australia's awards are Tenders WA's open-data files (July 2021 to June 2024) plus newer awards from the live Tenders WA register, with July 2024 onwards still being back-filled; Queensland's are its agencies' own contract disclosure; the Australian Capital Territory's are its live Contracts Register plus its 2000-2017 registers under CC BY. The Australian Capital Territory is still the one jurisdiction that is different in kind: it ALSO publishes the invoices it has paid, which live under ACT payments and are never counted as one of its awards. Victoria and South Australia are Buying for Victoria and SA Tenders and Contracts, used with each publisher's written permission.
The Northern Territory's tenders, forward plans and awards all come from Quotations and Tenders Online, the Territory's tender site and the only NT award register there is. Its awards are awarded tenders and quotes from November 2010, one row per awarded supplier, with no contract term, no GST flag and no count of offers received. An NT value is worth reading as an estimate: the Territory is the one publisher here that states an amount against each awarded supplier, an award's value is the sum of them, and many of those amounts are schedules of rates rather than agreed prices.
Tasmania is not available yet. The status word on the States and territories page is read from the data every time the page opens, so it changes on the day a source is released rather than the day somebody remembers to edit it.
The figures at the top
The Government page opens with three names and a count from Commonwealth contract notices, refreshed hourly.
- Biggest buyer — the agency that published the most contract value this quarter, and its share of the quarter. Opens its profile.
- Biggest winner — the company that won the most this quarter, counting all its ABNs. Opens the company.
- Fastest-growing buyer — the agency furthest ahead of the same days last quarter, among those that bought at least $1M then. Opens its profile.
- First-time winners — companies whose first Commonwealth contract started in the last 30 days. Opens Market intelligence › Suppliers.
What you will be able to do
- Open an entity and see its buying pattern, panels, programs and audit findings (audit findings are not joined yet).
- Compare who wins from a given agency in a given category.
- Check exactly which jurisdictions are loaded before relying on a figure.
